PostSubject: Question about upgrading my rig   2010-05-09, 3:59 pm

I'm trying to figure out how I would upgrade my current rig with a new mobo, cpu and memory, and I want to make sure that the ones I've currently chosen would actually work with each other. This is both for a project, and if I can convince my dad, I may actually be able to upgrade the rig if the price is right, as well as everything is going to actually work.
Current GFX Card is a GeForce 8800 GTX
Current Power Supply, I can't actually figure out what the power supply is, but the numbers on the power cord, read as follows:
Volex
VS019 SMI
15A 125V

Motherboard

CPU

Memory

Any comments, questions about the rest of the pc components, or recommendations, feel free to post

Yeah those three parts will work together but you want to make sure your power supply isn't outdated. If you could find out more information about that post it.

I looked around, and based on the specs of the day and the type of case it is, apparently alienware used a 750w power supply. but i can't find the spec sheet that came with the computer, so i can't be sure.

Alright well if you open your case there is a sticker on the power supply. Important information to look for is total wattage and how many amps on the +12v rails. Look at the picture I post below for reference. Your power supply may have more than one +12v rail but usually less means more stability.

IIRC, Core i7's use a bit more power than most chips so you'd probably be better allocating room in the budget for a newer, bigger power supply anyways. (NAME-BRAND, NOT GENERIC!)

If your existing power supply is 2-3 years old or it's one that came with a pre-built computer then it's a no-brainer.

Like everyone said, check your power supply. But what you selected will work together. If it's any help, here's what I recently got (October 2009) as my current rig:

In short - it's a Core i7 920 Overclocked at 4.0 GHz. 6 GB of Memory. I run 2 GeForce 9500GT's for 4 monitors.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188039

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227381

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139001
(Modular is a bit over the top, but I like a clean machine so it keeps cords to a minimum)

Yeah, generally Antec, Corsair, Thermaltake are pretty good brands. Depending on if your planning to upgrade your graphics card you can decide how many watt power supply to buy, to give you an idea I have a GeForce GTX 275 and it runs fine on 650Watts.

well honestly i don't plan on replacing my current computer, though if i can convince my dad that it'd be worth it, then i'd definately try to build my own from scratch, with capability to be upgraded later
also i know nothing about overclocking...
i'd like to have 2 monitors running at once as i don't have the space for anymore, and i'm trying to figure out what size screens would fit on my desk as well as wouldn't look too big/small

Alright let us know man, I can help you with overclocking and stuff. Since you are not upgrading right now though I recommend you do some research on building computers, building doesn't take much to do but there are little things you should learn like keeping static force away from your components, connecting your computer case's power buttons, LEDs to the motherboard, etc.

Thats always the annoying part is finding the spots on the motherboard for your powerbutton and your led lights and stuff. Yeah they're color coded but not the easy way red matchs red and such, its like grren matchs blue, red matchs orange, orange is actually white btw, white depends on the color its next to also and crap like that. Its so annoying.

My only suggestion about your wish list is to grab a better video card. The one you chosen isn't a significant upgrade from the one you already own, and when it comes to gaming the main components are CPU and GPU (graphics card), so you can actually pick cheaper power supply and maybe cheaper sounds system and put that money toward the card lol

Here is some stuff to take note of. The rest of the stuff...is personal preference.

Hardrive:
  • Note: Western Digital and Hitachi have stable products.
Memory:
  • Tip: Try to find memory with the Lowest Cache and Timings as possible that you can afford.
Powersupply:
  • Note: 850w is plenty unless your going to SLI or Crossfire.
Videocard:
  • Tip: Shoot for a card with DirectX11 support. Do not cheap out on the GPU.
Case:
  • Note: Just remember, Videocards are a big nowadays, so a bigger case is probably needed. Also make sure their is enough ventilation
Motherboard:
  • Tip: Do not cheap out on the motherboard.
  • Note: Always shoot for a motherboard with SLI or Crossfire support, and build quality. You never know when you may need dual GPU support.
Screen:
  • Tip: Shoot for the least Response Time

If I were to eventually plan to do SLI or Crossfire, what kind of Power supply would I be wanting to get?

People have gotten the Geforce GTX 480 (The best video card out in the market) to run in Two-Way SLI with a 800watt power supply like this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la7lfh1xRYY
I would say the power supply in your and Reave's wishlist will run most cards in Two-way SLI but it really depends on how loaded your PC is. Here a tool you can use to calculate wattage.
