Notch and the crew are at PAX showing off Minecraft Beta v1.8, aka 'The Adventure Update':
http://www.justin.tv/fdoke/b/293539704?
^^ Recorded livestream of Notch playing and showing off various aspects. (He sounds like an awesome guy, too.) It's pretty long - about 51min or so.
Going to be sooooooooooooooooo awesome! A real breath of fresh air added to the game.
Sample impressions as I watch the recorded livestream:
EDIT: The new title screen shows off a sample world in the background. Kind of has that 'world-spanning, Zelda: Ocarina Of Time title screen' look to it.
EDIT2: Love the NPC towns.
EDIT3: Biomes are HUUUUUUUGE now and have lots more variety and types. Worlds look way more natural and organic. Deep oceans, continents, canyons, and rivers. Notch says early in the video that one of the new terrain biomes he put in was a 'hilly terrain' variation. Later on, he shows off a plains biome and mentions a mountainous biome. He wants to add in rain forests and swamps as well.
EDIT4: Randomly-generated old, abandoned mineshafts in caves, complete with mine tracks? COOL!
EDIT5: No more lag during lighting changes (ie. sunrises, sunsets). Rain and weather has vastly improved performance too. (Good. These are my main two sources of FPS drops in the game.)
EDIT6: Notch is thinking about breaking up the Adventure Update into parts due to how long it's taking to finish all of the planned features.

I want a damn release date! :-)
Very soon. They were throwing around the September 8th release date, but I'm not sure if they can make it. That, and Notch has once again handed off full Minecraft development over to Jens while he works on a 'secret project' for a couple of weeks.
Trailer has a lot of cool things in it: NPC villages (the actual NPCs will be non-existent until v1.9 though), fence gates, farmable melons, ravines/canyons that make worlds look awesome, the new dungeon bricks (craftable too), vines, mobs apparently dropping a hell of a lot more food since you actually have to eat now, Creative mode (like the old-school Creative mode, but updated for the modern MC era), Endermen (they were dropping diamonds at one point - something that was 'probably' going to get changed), etc.
Going to be fun. I can't wait to see how the new worldgen makes worlds look. Notch was working on a swamp biome the other day (pic here), so that's probably going to make it in. More biome-related things (rain forests, volcanoes, other stuff) are in the plans for v1.9, so depending on the coolness factor, my new 1.8 worlds may be very short-lived for the 1.9s, lol.

Also i've done the skyblock survival map (legit) and It's addictive and awesome and you should seriously try it it out...
I had to start over 2 times one was a creeper spawned on my first night and blew up everything the other was i got zero sapling from the tree so i was completely fucked.
I love all the new things Notch and Jens have been adding to Minecraft lately. It's really starting to turn into more of a 'game' than just a sandbox builder. What I don't like are some of the performance issues that have cropped up as well as a couple of other things:
- I saw on Reddit that the theoretical map size is smaller now with the new biome code than before. Granted, it's not an issue as it's larger than you will ever realistically need in 99.999999999999999999% of cases, but still. Regression!
- New biome layout is pretty cool, but it feels like a lot of the mish-mash feeling that there used to be in worlds is gone, and IMO that added a lot to the charm. Now everything is more organized and has its own section. This is both good & bad, but it's something that can be remedied with a bit more variety added into each biome. Oceans can be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too big now considering how empty and useless water is in this game. I like that there are actually bodies of water now instead of little ponds, but wow at the waste of space.
- The underground black fog that goes up a few layers above the bedrock can get fucked. It can get FUCKED. In addition to the smaller theoretical map size, this is also something that hinders building. IMO, the fog should be caused by an item/block so people who hate it can forcibly remove it and those who like it can place it/leave it. This would allow for the fog to be used in random spots and give builders another tool.
In about a week and a half the game is going into a code freeze and for the next month after that Notch and Jens are going to polish up the code, fix bugs, and enchance performance if they can find areas in which to do so.
Notch has spent the past couple of days working on Enderdragons for a new Ender dimension (Endermen homeland)!
