Fog Nightmare Farming: A Guide

Why Farm Fog Nightmares?

Fog Nightmares are some of the BEST mobs to farm for dust in the entire game. It's not uncommon to get several stacks of dust if you do multiple Fog Nightmare farming runs. There are other useful drops depending on what else you kill and/or salvage. Fog Nightmares also give a decent amount of experience if you solo them so it can help build up skill points for consumables.

Fog Nightmare Farming: Normal Mode Or Hard Mode?

Farm Fog Nightmares in NM as they possess Grenth's Balance in HM plus hit harder and take longer to kill. The dust drops even in NM still range from 20 to mid-30's in number. It's plenty enough to avoid the hassles of the HM Fogs slowing you down.

Prominent Fog Nightmare Farming Locations:

Fog Nightmares are Krytan mobs so they only spawn in Kryta zones and missions.

The Black Curtain:
The main source of Fog Nightmare farming due to its ease of reach, numbers, and route. The Fog Nightmares in this area are all located around a swampy isle-laden triangular rock in the southern area. This guide will focus on this zone's Fog Nightmare farming with slight mentions of the other areas.

Talmark Wilderness:
There is another rock in Talmark Wilderness which has lots of Fog Nightmares around it as well as a Fog Nightmare boss. Talmark Wilderness also has lots of Oakhearts which can drop plant fibers, among other things.

Kessex Peak:
If you continue past the Fog Nightmares in The Black Curtain, past the Forest Minotaurs, and head into Kessex Peak, the beginning stretch of that zone before you reach the trolls has lots of Fog Nightmares and Pod pop-ups. There is also sometimes a necro Fog Nightmare boss which spawns. It's an even better spot than The Black Curtain if you want BOTH dust and fibers as there are much more encounters with Pods. You farm all of the mobs from the beginning of the zone until you reach the trolls and then let them kill you. You'll res back at the res shrine in the beginning of Kessex Peak (where you started from), and can then just rezone and repeat.

When Is Fog Nightmare Farming Viable For Your Character(s)?

It ISN'T VIABLE for any characters which have the War In Kryta storyline active!!!

The WiK storyline gets activated - ie. White Mantle and White Mantle Peacekeeper mobs show up all over Krytan explorable areas - if your character has beaten Prophecies and/or Eye Of The North. If that's the case, you won't be able to farm Fog Nightmares on said character until you finish the WiK storyline on him/her. Peacekeepers are hard to solo farm so getting past them isn't too worthwhile, and in The Black Curtain (maybe for other areas too), they even take out the Fog Nightmares before you can!

After you complete The Battle For Lion's Arch quest to complete The War In Kryta storyline on your character, all Kryta explorable areas return to their normal, pre-WiK, state UNLESS you have a War In Kryta Wanted Bounty active in your quest log (which obviously puts WiK mobs there for the bounty).

Fog Nightmare Farming In The Black Curtain:

A Labeled Map Of The Black Curtain:

The arrow points to the rock with Fog Nightmare mobs all around it, which I have labelled as 'Fog Nightmare Rock'. Some mobs are there already. Others pop-up along the way. There is a necro Fog Nightmare boss around the SE side of the rock as well.

How Long Does It Take To Get To The Fog Nightmares?

Only a couple of minutes. There isn't much resistance along the way from either side of the zone towards Fog Nightmare Rock.

First Fog Nightmare Rock Run:

Walk from ToA along the path towards Fog Nightmare Rock. Kill anything in the way or run past it with a run skill/speed buff if you can't. Once you get to Fog Nightmare Rock, walk around it counter-clockwise through the swampy island areas. You'll know the end of the run has been reached because around the far side you'll run out of Fog Nightmares mobs and all you'll see in the distance is undead mobs. At that point you can either walk all the way to the southern Cursed Lands portal and rezone or just die - either from degen in the swamp or from one of those undead mobs. You will res at the res shrine labeled on the above map where you can then walk to the portal and rezone.

Subsequent Fog Nightmare Rock Runs:

Walk back to Fog Nightmare Rock from the Cursed Lands portal and re-do the Fog Nightmare route around the rock, in reverse, ie. clockwise. Unless you are fast, you will have to go through one undead mob by a bridge just before the Fog Nightmare area. Easy enough.

Since doing a Fog Nightmare run clockwise ends with you way away from the Cursed Lands portal, just die in the swamp or from an undead mob (there is one at the end of the Fog Nightmare rock both counter-clockwise and clockwise) to res at the res shrine near the Cursed Lands portal.

Repeat this for every subsequent run. It's recommended to bring along several salvage kits and/or merchant summoning stones to allow for continuous runs.

Run Rewards:

- Dust (20 to mid-30's per drop from Fog Nightmares, even in NM)
- Shadowy Remnants from Fog Nightmares which salvage into Dust
- Other materials from salvaging drops such as Iron, Bone, and Wood
- Non-Inscribable Golds
- Decayed Orr Emblems (if you kill any undead in the zone)
- Plant Fibers (if you kill Reed Stalkers, Oakhearts, or Pods in the zone)

Basically, this run can give you a decent-to-large amount of THREE of the conset-required materials, leaving only feathers to acquire separately.

According to the Official GuildWiki List Of Wintersday Collectors, Shadowy Remnants can be turned into the Lion's Arch Wintersday Collector named Priestess Siara for Eggnogs, Fruitcakes, or Snowman Summoners at a 1:1 rate.

What Builds Can Farm The Fog Nightmares?

In The Black Curtain, most classes should be capable. Fog Nightmares in NM don't pack much of a punch as long as you bring along some self-support skills such as extra defense and ones which restore your health. If a class can't farm the undead or anything else around the Fog Nightmares, bring a run skill/speed buff to get past them. As is always the case in undead-heavy Kryta, swamps are poisonous and will degen your health so account for that.

For other areas such as Talmark Wilderness and Kessex Peak, it might require a bit more creativity since there are many more mobs on the way/during the run such as Oakhearts and/or Pods. Anti-Knockdown is necessary unless you carefully maneuver and time your skill-casting.

A basic Ritualist Signet Of Spirits Spirit Spammer build works fine in any of these areas (and that's what I suggest). An Elementalist with damage, extra armor, healing skills such as Aura of Restoration, and an optional run skill/speed buff will get you to and through the mobs in The Black Curtain pretty easily. Not sure about the other areas. I used to farm the Fog Nightmares in Talmark Wilderness with a Prot Spirit + Signets Monk a couple of years ago so that might still work.

Post any builds you have that work for any of these areas. We'd love to compile as many working variants as possible!

Here is the specific Rit Spirit Spammer build I like to use for farming Fog Nightmares:
