FWIW, this is the most pissed off I've been about the Boston Red Sox ever. Ever. More than Aaron F'ing Boone in 2003. More than down 0-3 in 2004. More than Tom Gordon blowing his 1st save since April 1998 in Game 4 of the 1998 ALDS, sending the Sox home. More than the Dante Bichette-Mike Lansing trade in 2001. More than the Sox getting swept out of the playoffs in 1990 and 1995. More than the Sox finishing in last place in the old 7-team AL East back in 1992. More than any other chokejob because this is worse than any other regular-season chokejob that I've seen, considering the strength of the team. They had a 10-game lead on a playoff spot around September 1st and here we sit on the last day of the regular season TIED for the wildcard. WTF?!

This team was built to win, yet started out the season 2-10 and finished it by going 7-19 in September with 1 game to play (maybe 2 if there's a 1-game playoff). I've felt like I've wanted to kill someone all month. I saw this coming 3 weeks ago.

I don't give a shit about the injuries excuse either. Sure, it's had some effect but there are more than enough regulars playing - and playing BAD. This is the worst stretch of major-league pitching I've ever seen from any team. NOBODY can give the Sox 5 innings from a start. It's all 3 innings, 4 innings, 2 innings shit. No joke - John Lackey is the worst Red Sox starting pitcher in 70 years! (Stats don't lie.) They've lost 3 pitchers in their system to Tommy John surgery over the past 18 months (and Alfredo Aceves could be heading that way if the Sox continue to have to run him into the ground). The pitching situation is so bad that the Red Sox were actually trying to trade for Kansas City's Bruce Chen the past 2 days to play in a must-win 1-game-playoff game. I mean, who the fuck does that?! Trade for a guy to win your do-or-die, who then wouldn't even be eligible for the post-season roster, so after he pitches and showers you have to kick him off of the bus. Why would he even give a shit about helping the Sox out?

With all that said, if this team stayed healthy and Buchholz hadn't gone down back in June with a back problem, if Kevin Youkilis didn't have every single part of his body nagging him the past year, if Carl Crawford wasn't such a goddamn bum, and if Adrian Gonzalez - the man with "the perfect swing for Fenway" (as all the analysts say) who couldn't even hit the 30-HR mark playing half of his games in Fenway - would've shown more pop, then this team woulld've been fine. The Yankees have played the entire season over their heads, and the Rays didn't exactly have a great month of September either. It's the damn Red Sox doing it all to themselves, just like always.

This collapse effectively ends my 2004 honeymoon with this Red Sox front office. Now, I'm not one of those "I'm a hardcore fan so sign 5 more high-priced free agents to make up for this shit" kind of guy, but I want the pitching coach gone, the hitting coach gone, the third-base coach gone, and John Lackey gone. Carl Crawford needs to learn how to hit, and our GM Theo Epstein needs to learn that someone who has a low career on-base percentage isn't worth over $20 million a year. A low OBP means he doesn't know how to get on base unless his hits fall in. Simply put, he doesn't know how to walk, which is a sign that he has no idea how to tell what's a ball and what's a strike coming out of ANY pitcher's glove. That is not a good trait for a slap hitter with very little power to have.

Signed,
Pissed off in Albany

Price hasn't pitched good in a month. Even the shitty-playing Red Sox got to him this month.

I can't believe the Yankees even let Teixeira swing that hard tonight. They don't want any part of the Red Sox in the playoffs, and everyone knows it. If Boston can make it through this rough stretch, they start over at 0-0 in the playoffs with a team built to win and people getting healthy (as they have been getting healthy the past week or so). This collapse will be just a (horrible) memory. I figured Joe Girardi (the NYY manager) would've had position players pitching to ensure that the Rays ended up with more runs tonight by out #27. Granted, there's still plenty of time left for that to happen, lol. Last night, Russell Martin didn't score from 3rd on an easy double and also hit into a damn triple play, so signs of some of their players "throwing it" are evident.

I hate Mark Teixeira, but at least he's not a coward. I can respect that if not his horse face.

Ehh I expected the yankees to rest less players tonight because I figured they would rather have at the red sox than the rays right now. I disagree I think the rays are easily the hottest team in baseball right now and I figured this would be a good warm up game before the post season but The rays are getting raped right now so its Boston's to lose.

Rays only have a decent record in September because they've played the slumping Red Sox 7 times in the past two weeks. They are actually at or below .500 against all other opponents. They aren't hot. They took advantage of the breaks given to them. Still, they have a good rotation but the Yankees know they can outslug them in a 7-game series. The Yankees know that the Red Sox can hit Mariano Rivera, have already beaten CC Sabathia 4x this year alone, and were a better team than the Yankees were until all of this shit happened.

Sox are only up 3-2 right now. I'm nervous as hell even considering the Rays' score. No doubt in my mind that the Rays win a do-or-die one-game playoff if it comes to that. They are in the Sox' heads. It's tonight or bust for Boston.

EDIT: Rain delay in Baltimore.

...And here it comes! Sad

Yankees switched enough pitchers until they found one who couldn't get outs. 8 pitchers later... Luis Ayala, you fuck! 2 beanballs, HBP in a run, walked in a run, then throw a meatball to the only good hitter Tampa Bay has in Longoria for a 3-run bomb. Just like that - from 7-0 to 7-6. Thankfully the Yanks got the 3rd out and they're going to the 9th inning now, but shit.

It's going to rain in Baltimore for a while yet. If there's going to be a do-or-die playoff game tomorrow, then the Red Sox will be dead tired as their game won't end until after midnight with the do-or-die game scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in Tampa Bay.

...And the Rays hit a game-tying 2-out HR in the 9th... just fair inside the right field foul pole. Typical. Just typical.

Mother of fuck.

...And now Scott Proctor is coming in for the Yankees. He's one of the worst relief pitchers of the past few years. Hell, the Red Sox hit their 14th-inning GW HR against the Yankees off of Scott Proctor on Sunday night.

Mother of fuck.

It gets even better. NO OTHER PITCHERS are available for the Yankees tonight, so it's Scott Proctor 'til death.

Mother of fuck. Cowards.

I'd like to think that even if the Rays now win this game that it will at least go 15 innings or so, so at the very least they'll be tired tomorrow afternoon as well. Fat chance with Scott Proctor in the game. I know the Rays can't hit for shit, but even they'll be able to get a run off of him within the next inning or two.

LET'S GO YANKEE MINOR-LEAGUERS, LET'S GO! Cool

I said earlier that among other changes I'd like to see made for the Red Sox, that I'd like to see our third-base coach shitcanned. I want that because all he does is send Sox baserunners into outs for the past 2 years without recourse. Tonight he sent Marco Scutaro into an out at home.

Papelbon blows the save in the bottom of the 9th for the Sox and if (WHEN) the Rays win, they'll get the wildcard. Flyball fell in just in front of a diving Carl Crawford scoring the winning run. Crawford could've probably had that ball, but it's Carl fucking Crawford. He sucks.

Meanwhile, in hell, the Yankees had runners at 1st and 3rd with 0 outs and their runner got picked off of 3rd on a grounder. They threw the game, as I said they would.

...AND AS I TYPE THE ABOVE, THE RAYS WIN ON A BULLSHIT HOMERUN RIGHT DOWN THE LEFT FIELD LINE BY LONGORIA. BARELY ABOVE THE LEFT FIELD WALL TOO. BARELY OVER.

CONGRATULATIONS, FUCKS.

I could say that I am devastated by this month's turn of events, but I won't.

The Red Sox were the best team in baseball and they won't even get one playoff game this year. Mother of fuck.

The Yankees get the Detroit Tigers in the first round. That means Sabathia vs Verlander in Game 1. Verlander has been the best pitcher in baseball this year, so he better not fuck this up. The Tigers better not lay down either. They were the hottest team in the AL over the past 6 weeks. The Yankees have been living on smoke and mirrors all season.

If the Yankees can get sent home in a week too, then all will be well with the world. All the Red Sox need to do is get healthy and stay healthy, and 2012 will still be theirs for the taking. Still a deep-ass team that simply fell apart at the end. Shit happens, and as a Red Sox fan, I've seen shit happen an awful lot.

Really, Boston's fortunes turned literally the day after Hurricane Irene swept through at the end of August. Something was in the water, and I mean something other than peoples' cane-swept furniture.

Never doubt the predictions of a great fortune teller like myself. This was the greatest night of baseball I have ever seen. Not only the rays-sox drama but the freaking braves game was just as insane.

Admit it - you barely even pay attention to baseball, like the other 30,000 Rays "lifelongs" who were at Tropicana Field tonight. You didn't pay any attention to Tampa Bay over the summer.

That said, it was a great night in baseball despite what occurred tonight. Crawford better send someone up to Boston to clean out his locker for him, because the pitchforks are already out for a lynching. If he knows what's good for him, he won't show his face in the northeast until next spring.

I called my friend with cable in his dorm if he was watching the game to see If I could go there to watch it and I ran about 3/4 of a mile in under 4 minutes I was about to die. Completely worth it though.
