I got to the next bonfire! There is some fucking impossible miniboss thing by it, and also I ran all the way around avoiding some dudes and found a boss who ruined me in 1 hit. :<

I've heard good things about this game. I don't have any working consoles of the current generation anymore, so I'm assed out on giving it a go myself, save for maybe trying it out at my nephew's house.

It's pretty brutal, but that's all part of the charm. Definitely the kind of game you need to get used to, the tagline really fits. 'Prepare to die'.

The one with the blacksmith beneath it? And that huge lightning-shooting demon in the room next to him? Me too. I'm like "Um, where do I go next lol?" And you're talking about the huge black guy with the giant mace and giant shield? He's not as tough as he looks, he's very slow, and if you can avoid getting hit once unguarded then he will go down in like 8 strong-attacks and you'll be able to get the Fire Keeper's Soul behind him.

You know the gate behind where the armored boar was with the archers up on that one mossy balcony? Well, I got that open after somehow ****ing getting through (I got to the bonfire directly underneath the dragon on the giant bridge, after getting sizzled three times, which helped) including that caped armored skeleton, then somehow I aggroed that fencing also-caped also-armored but more colored armor skeleton from a further-on balcony and he came up from me from behind but I survived somehow (after learning DON'T attack them when they're in a particular stance), and then I had to deal with another fucking super fast, armor skeleton. But managed to get the gate open, decided to go back and bonfire and go back through the gate coming back as I'd have now opened it for good. IT WAS FUCKING CLOSED. I almost quit playing for good right there lol.

You play this game with dread but it's very addicting, because of the same mechanic that was in Demon's Souls "when you die and drop your souls, you must get to them and recover them or you'll lose them if you die again" as well as the new one "when you light a bonfire and heal/refill yourself the downside is this respawns every non-boss non-miniboss in the world again". These mechanics make you feel on edge 24/7 (as well as the combat) which is amazinggg. It didn't have much of a tutorial but what it did worked. This game is challenging and can feel so unforgiving, and death is frequent so you will be playing the same areas a lot as trial-and-error until you get to the next bonfire (which explains why I can talk so specifically to Link about certain areas because you really do get to learn every area and every single enemy very well). But the sense of achievement when you accomplish something is enormous. So far I've been able to handle every boss and mini-boss on the first time which I think is a feat.

I have to say though that they advertise this as open-world, but it feels linear so far. When you get past the first tutorial area, you basically are (from what it seems so far) put in the middle of a line, and on either side of that line is something you must get (and I can imagine a super-boss on either side). You don't really have a choice of which way to go at first either as one side starts off with a graveyard with enemies that are just a bit too hard for you (based on your low level/equipment). Going the other way, there's also certain dead-ends you shouldn't go down (with a special item being guarded) because there's a really strong enemy there that owns you in seconds; this adds to the sense of linearity IMO. However, I've seen at least two locked gates/doors that look like they lead somewhere but I don't know at this point, having just started. Perhaps the game will feel open world later.

Right now I also feel like I have various random shit in my inventory that I have no idea what it does and it feels like it will be a while until I find better armor than my current starter armor, and I still have my starting weapon haha despite fought 5 bosses and seen a merchant and a blacksmith. This makes your original class choice all the more important though. I haven't really touched on crafting or "reinforcing" either, I wish I could get to them though because I'm desperate for anything that can make my character better.

Overall, I'm loving this game though. The sense of having no idea what will happen, the slow character development and ever-increasing challenges. My personal "just right" difficulty I think is higher than your standard western rpg/shooter (e.g. infamous 2 or drake's fortune) but even still this game is harder than that, and there are times when it feels completely unfair but honestly I can't stop thinking about this game.

LOL this is no longer true. Got owned by the Bell Gargoyles... multiple times. ONE I could handle, slowly but surely. But when the second comes along... Ugh.

Link make sure you go down the elevator in the undead cathedral, activate the Firelink shrine again (for ten flasks and talk to the mute bitch underneath the shrine to upgrade your flasks (you should have a Firekeeper's soul by then)), also I read online (cuz i was stuck) apparently you need some kind of ... soap white soap item thingo I forgot it's name but that guy on the edge of the giant bridge who is a crackhead obsessed with the sun with the dragon on da bridge you are supposed to summon him for the bell gargoyle fight and he LOLOLOLOLOLowns them.

LOL. Just completely owned the Bell Gargoyles. Decided to go back and get the Drake Sword and OMG THAT THING PWNS. I could almost manage them without the summon dude, but not quite. With him, we got the first Belly to about 10% health before the second one hit the ground :3

Nice one gurl. Get those Bell Gargoyle bitches. <3~

I can't get the Drake Sword because that dragon died for me with some dumb glitch while I was farming souls. Sad Luckily there's apparently an easy 7000 souls/2-3 minute farm if you can defeat the Titanite Demon.

I think I'm like 3 bosses ahead of you gurl (at Gaping Dragon, which is pretty easy tbh (he slow) unless you make an dumb mistake and get killed in one hit but he has a huge amount of HP and I have done fucked up every time so far).

Just wait until you get to The Depths, most terrifying shit ever but I won't spoil it as to why. There was one point where I was literally screaming in terror in the middle of my living room and I'm hoping it happens to you too. Perfect example of why this game COMPLETES ME. I think... I think I might actually love it as much as Guild Wars. D: D: D:

Wow WHAT?!?!! So when I was(and still am) addicted to Demons Souls nobody wanted to give it a try but now everybody is a Dark Souls fan? THIS IS MADNESS!!!! Posers!!! Razz j/k Demon/Dark Souls are by far the best console RPG's in modern gaming(next-gen era), addictive, amazing atmosphere, amazing world, even better music, great storyline, simply perfect. So if any of you bitches want to either get pwned or need some help, add me on PSN, Pache00. I just got the Lordvessel so I'm almost finishing the game and can basically help with anything anywhere. Plus I'm getting ready for another 3/4 play troughs just like on Demon Souls. Oh and again, POSERS! Gunner

And btw Zephy don't bother with the Drake Sword, it's only good at first, if you're already past the Depths you should already have a handful of swords better than that one. It has high dmg, but no bonus from attributes, so in the long run you can pretty much make almost any sword stronger. Thats without mentioning it breaks faster than most weapons(with the exception of crystal weps) and the strong attack(R2) is basically useless. And a word of advise for almost every boss, if it has a tail, cut it and it will drop a special wep.

And about the open world, like you said, is after a while. Basically after you get to Darkroot Garden/Basin you can in almost any direction that will lead to a different area and that area that leads to another. If you go to the Depths, it'll lead to Blightown, which leads to Demon Ruins or The Great Hollow or Ash Lake, or in The Catacombs you can go to Tomb of the Giants, Crystal Cave, or back to Demon Ruins or Lost Izalith and so on. Theres probably more than 20 different places, all of them a bit bigger than the one before. So in the beginning it might feel a bit linear, but in the end theres a gagillion different places you can go which keep connecting to one another, and the best part, it's all walking!!!! ;D

PostSubject: Re: Dark Souls   2011-10-14, 7:10 am

LOL Victor I was hoping you'd discover this thread as I remember you talking to us about Demon's Souls on vent. Honestly, I didn't even consider trying Demon's Souls when you super recommended it (not being much of a console game in the slightest) but I'm really glad I listened to the reviews of Dark Souls. I'll accept being a poser if I can also accept that I fucking adore this game. =P

About Drake Sword: I agree as it doesn't scale with stats. I'm currently using a +4 Astora Straight Sword (need 2 more twinkling titanite and then I can work towards making it a Divine weapon... ooh or maybe I'll choose Lightning... or Occult... or? gah IDK yet). Less stamina cost to swing and deals more damage then Drake Sword... however, I still feel under-equipped in this game especially when comparing to other player phantoms and the game continues to remain difficult with progression.

About world openness: Having got further in the game now I feel like though a first playthrough should be sorta linear IMO (if you're looking for a typical experience) it's still an open-world and on succeeding playthroughs and/or NG+ any "linear" feelings in the game are minimal and unimportant especially comparing to other RPGs or Action/Adventure titles.

Also, I'm soon to be up to the The Duke's Archives/Crystal Cave boss myself, so I should definitely add you on PSN which I think is kzj_nhy_e or something and we can perhaps do that boss together. (Don't ask about the username, random letters lol.)

I would love to summon a friend for a boss fight because: For the Sen's Fortress boss, I summoned one player (who was a sorceror unlike myself) around my level and the fight was amazing and I felt like I accomplished a lot using good teamwork (I was literally jumping around in excitement)... however, for the Anor Londo boss I summoned two guys who were obviously fully established characters and the fight was a push-over, I basically stood back and only got a few combos off when the aggro wasn't on me. Essentially, I let them do the work. Oh well, at least they got humanity from it but I missed out on that amazing accomplished feeling which is fundamental to Dark Souls. Therefore, I shall look to add you, you'll be my first PSN friend. <3 (lol as I said, not much of a console gamer.)

PS: I'm scared shitless that because I have a Dragon Scale that I'm constantly going to get invaded by members of the Dragon covenant. The online features are really something that I love about this game. I'm also not sure if I want to try a different covenant as I like the invasion-reduction that Way of White has. Forest Hunters and Blade of the Darkmoon interest me. The apparent glitches that can easily ruin the former that I've read about take away the appeal though the sound of an invisibility ring and invading players who enter the forest sounds amazing. Blade of the Darkmoon sounds freaking sweet, especially the invasions that don't give the target a warning.

PostSubject: Re: Dark Souls   2011-10-14, 2:58 pm

Ok 1st, try to make your sword a divine weapon so you can kill the skeletons in the Catacombs and they won't re spawn. Lightning ain't really that helpful unless you're fighting dragons, most foes(except dragons) have a high lightning def. I already used the lord vessel and I really don't know who I want to fight 1st, so if you go to Dukes, I'll go with you to kill that mofo.

The covenants, they're all great, but right now(although I haven't joined them) the grave lord covenant sounds awesome, you can place "traps" on your area that will automatically make any invading player to appear in your world(instead of the one they intended to invade) so you can kick his arse for wanting to screw other people. I'm currently with the Princess Guard which makes it extremely easy to travel since you can warp from bonfire to bonfire(only selected ones) without the need of walking for half an hour. Thank God I got out of the Dragon covenant or else there would've been a chance of me invading you(although I would've never known it was you with that user) and someone would've had to get hurt. Razz

If you join the Forest Hunter covenant, when you put on the ring that lets you be summoned to guard the forest and you kill the invader, you'll receive a random titanite, it could be twinkling, demon, large shard, white, green, any kind of titanite. So if you want to upgrade your weapons you might want to give it a shot(thats how I got my main weapons almost maxed).

Also, if you would've listened and played Demon Souls, you would've known you can trade stuff with the giant crow. You hop inside his nest and he'll take you back to the Asylum where you started the game(now with new, stronger foes, including 2 black knights and a much stronger version of the Asylum Demon), and you drop certain items inside a second nest that you'll find to the left of the cliffs(if your coming from inside the Asylum it will be on the right). Depending on which item you drop(only 1 of each per play through) he will drop several different items. Hint: He'll give you twinkling titanite for bloodred, purple and blooming moss(thats a total of 4 cause he gives you 2 for blooming).

I'll be sure to add you on PSN(if you haven't added me already) although there are being some issues with the servers so we might not end up in the same server making it impossible to summon each other. It'll suck if that happens but let's hope it doesn't! :/

BTW Is it me, or is Great Gray Wolf Sif the most bad ass boss ever(with the exception of MGS 3 bosses)?

Divine it is!! I was considering it because I read it can prevent Catacomb skeletons from coming back alive -- but I wasn't sure like which one I'd prefer. I don't feel expert on the crafting system yet.

My main concerns about Forest Hunter is apparently there is a high chance of it glitching and one of the NPCs dying in a glitch while you may be in the area but nowhere near them and all of a sudden you are on the Book of Guilty and no longer in the covenant. Otherwise, I would totally be interested in that one. You make Gravelord covenant sound amazing too and I love the idea of invading invaders.

Oh yah I knew about the crow trading, but only because of teh internets. I got 4 twinklies from him so far and I have some more stuff to trade too. I also know that you need some doll from there to get into the Painted World of Aramis.

I want to do Seath with you (which is the first boss I've gone after after getting the Lordvessel).
*plot spoiler about The Duke's Archives which you might not want to look at depending on whether you're like Link and want to be completely oblivious to what is coming*
Spoiler:

I have found my way back to the bonfire at the beginning of The Duke's Archives, as I needed flasks desperately lol, and have yet to traverse further into the Crystal Cave.

so we'll have to figure out a time we're both on. GMT +8:00 I can be on any time from 7am to 11pm. But it's gonna be a long shot if we can actually manage to summon each other. Kahje is my character's name, I'm pretty sure kzj_nhy_e is my PSN but I will look to add Pache00. By the way, apparently you must be within 20% of the summoner's level (above and below) to see their summon sign. I'm level 76 so I think that means I think you need to be level 61-92 or something.

I haven't got up to Sif yet, though I did (with no souls) do a Leeroy Jenkins into the forest to explore and got eaten by a giant cat. Fun times. Though from the trailer... a giant wolf with a giant sword? D: FML.

ETA: OMG I NEED TO ADD I AM SO EXCITED I AM ABOUT TO GET THE ORNSTEIN SET. Though it's apparently not upgradeable which sucks.

Very Happy Already got my Ornstein armor, most bad ass armor in game IMO, right next to Painting Guardian sets(I always switch between the 2 cause I simply can't decide which one I like best). I'm lvl 70 I think, so we'll be ok. Just give me a time through PSN so we can meet and add my account cause I tried to add yours and either I wrote the wrong one or you did. Besides Pache00 is easier to remember than adsijhd_sdjihbfkds_e, or whatever yours is. XD And I'm currently at the entrance of Crystal Cave so it seems we're probably in the same spot right now. So add me and we can go rape Seath together, maybe Nito and the Four Kings too if you have those areas unlocked, those and Gwyn are the only ones I need to beat the game. Then is time to get gang banged in NG+. Crying or Very sad

I should have those areas unlocked, I'm pretty sure they should be since I activated the Lordvessel right?

Anyway, I hope it's easier for friends to play with each other. I can't tonight as I have a friend over but hopefully soon we can find a time we're both online.

You know, I tried to search for 'Men In Fights' on YouTube to counter the Men In Tights clip (was looking for any random, bloody street fight to embed here), but ended up finding this instead:

...And really, WHAT THE FUCK is this, honestly? Is that english? I think I hear the word "Jesus" in there somewhere towards the end, but I don't know.

LOL Steve WTF is that? I can't understand a single word they're saying. I don't know what's more amazing, how they talk, how they "fight", or how skinny they are. And Zeph I'll accept the req as soon as I get online, just send me a msg whenever you can go. Although I must say, I'm kinda in a race with a friend for who finishes the game 1st so I might finish it today. Anyways, we can do some ass kicking afterwards anyways.

That's fine I don't want to slow you down though you probably will never need me to phantom for you lol and I looked at your trophies and you're way ahead of me. But if you wanna phantom for me PLEASE DO as I'd love to play with a friend and I guess I could use the help. We'll have a night of fun; a romping good time. <3<3<3

Also, could I even summon you over and over if we just keep messenging each other where we are? Because that would be awesome.

Why not? If you need to summon me 47 times to beat 1 area, I'm good with it, the idea is having fun not just kill the boss and forget about everything else. And just for bragging rights, I have platinum on Demon Souls. Very Happy

Oh gurl I promise I'm not that bad. I killed the Darkroot Garden boss last night and I have to say it was a very enjoyable boss fight.

Can you please tell me when you are usually on? Because we're having trouble actually like being on at the same time lol.
