Let's put this in simple terms: if you own a gaming computer it is imperative that you sign up for a Steam account. There are TONS of deals regularly on lots of great games. Plus, it's a good place to network with friends. Doubt anyone is clueless to it at this point, but just in case, Steam is a digital download service that allows you to download games you have tied to your Steam account at any time. No need for install CDs or scrambling around the internet for the latest patch. Everything's here and everything is up-to-date. It is a great resource for any serious computer gamer. There are other digital download game services (each having their own deals and such), but Steam is the hands-down best. It's the iTunes of games.

This |OT| Is For All General Steam Talk

This Steam |OT| is intended to be a megathread for discussing all Steam deals, hookups, achievements, etc.. That kind of talk could get lost scattered amongst the various other threads here in the Gaming sub-forum so let's try and keep it one place. Smile

Feel free to talk about the Steam games themselves, but if interest in particular ones reach a high point, then by all means create an official thread |OT| for said game and delve deeper into specifics.

I think I already have everyone that still looks at the forums on my friends list, but just in case I don't, hit me up! You can totally ignore the ponies. I promise I'm still just regular ol' Linky.

I'm down to play pretty much any multiplayer game I own, especially Killing Floor or Dungeon Defenders right now.

Also: anyone who doesn't have Bastion... try out the demo and get it. For realz. There's new free DLC coming out for it tomorrow, as well as the fact that it's just incredible. Best indie game of the year IMO.

I actually tried the Bastion demo last week when it was the daily Steam sale. I wanted to see if it ran on my computer even though the min. requirements said 'dual-core processor'. From a forum post I read from the developer, it turns out that is the recommended specs for max performance. Even still, with my old-ass PC the demo ran great. No issues whatsoever. Couldn't even tell if my FPS was bad as the game was smooth as butter. Love the narrator, and the game is probably the most beautiful game I've ever seen visually. Just a great artistic style to it.

Couldn't really figure out wtf I was doing so I didn't buy the game during the daily sale, but it's definitely on my to-buy list sooner or later.

If you do end up buying it, I 100% recommend spending a little bit extra to get the soundtrack. It's a little more expensive, to be sure, but it is absolutely worth the price. I really think it holds up as a musical album even without it being from a video game I love.

Build That Wall (Zia's Theme) is my personal favourite, along with 'A Proper Story' (which is short but excellent).

Zia's Theme actually won a VGA this year.

On narrator: Amazing. I just love how he reacts to what you do in the world, and it really gives the game a depth that wouldn't otherwise be present IMO. Plus, he has pretty much the best voice I've ever heard for a narrator.

I love the narrator's sarcasm. Reminds me of the Cheshire Cat's voiceover in the original American McGee's Alice game.

Steam is having some sort of Winter Objective hunt (ie. Holiday-themed achievements for various games) for the next couple of weeks or so. Not much is known about it at this point (explanation is probably forthcoming by Valve itself soon), but a list of the various games' achievements and how to get them are listed here:

You can thank KingAciD @ DeviantArt for the icon itself. I took it and resized it to our icon size of 24x24. Looks good.

The daily objectives that Steam will be giving out during the Holiday Sale are from the list of these holiday achievements linked above. While you won't get credit (ie. Gift or Coal in your Steam Inventory) for getting said achievements until they're dished out officially as a daily objective, you can still work on the list ahead of time if you so desire.

I already have the Jamestown DLC done. The Charger ship is my favorite ship anyways so I've beaten way more than 1 stage with it. Smile

I also have one of the Bit.Trip Runner achievements done too.

Fable: The Lost Chapters is new to Steam as of Monday, December 19th and available as a Steam Daily Deal for $2.49 until Tuesday afternoon (Eastern time). I picked that up as well as the Jamestown 'Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot' DLC which is 50% off (from $2.99 down to $1.49).

All in all, I don't think I'll be spending all that much on this holiday sale in total. There really aren't too many games I'm looking to buy atm.

Keep at it. You'll get better. The progression in that game does a nice job of toughening you up over time. I was terrible at first too, and now I have every stage beat on the first 4 difficulty levels. (Fuck Judgement - seriously.) Jamestown is an awesome game. I love it. I don't have all of the challenge levels beat yet. (Fuck The Luge!)

Did you figure out the combo system yet? Collecting gold rings builds up your Vaunt meter. Once you go 'Vaunt' a shield bubble appears around you and eats the bullets from mobs for a few seconds. Good for planning strategy, especially against bosses. While in Vaunt you get 2x the points and do 2x the damage until the Vaunt meter runs out. (Your shot turns purple when in Vaunt.) You can keep the Vaunt meter up by collecting gold to keep it powered up. Otherwise you revert back to normal 1x-1x mode. It's a pretty simplistic system for a bullet hell game (I'm used to way more complex power-up systems) but it's alright.

I tried to get the Steam Holiday Achievement in And Yet It Moves, but oh my god. That game should be renamed to And Still It Sucks! WOW. I don't think there is any saving that game from blandness. The level design is awful (just a mish-mash of random blocks instead of a general themed layout), the music is boring, and the real killer for me is that a game based around jumping barely lets you fall for shit before insta-gibbing you.

The hell with that game, lol. Laughing

I love how DEFCON's Nuke Santa achievement was programmed haphazardly by the developer - so much so that the game crashes if you don't put the timer on fast-forward and put in enough cities into your base for Santa to fly around in before you can nuke him (DEFCON 1). Judging by the error message, the developer messed up his array code. I think he forgot to allocate enough elements for it or something. Santa comes to the end of his chain and *poof* - game crash. Neat game though. I am going to get into that a bit, I think, once this Santa shit is patched out. Fate Of The World as well.

I'm at 4 coal, a -33% Valve coupon, and a -25% Konami coupon. I still need to do that 'make a trade' achievement.

BTW, Link, if you like what you see in Jamestown, consider getting the Gunpowder, Treason, and Plot DLC. It's 4 extra ships to use and extra challenge levels. Jamestown is one of today's daily deals, so its DLC is only $0.74 (half of what I paid a couple of days ago). Good deal.
